It should be noted that grinding is the single largest consumer of energy within the raw material and cement clinker process circuit. In the cement manufacturing industry, limestone or dolomite raw materials require grinding twice before the final cement product can be packaged and sold. Initially, the process is a typical crushing and screening application. Rock is blasted from the quarry face, crushed and screened down to a 40mm to 20mm product before being placed through a mill. The milled raw material is then heated in a kiln to produce cement clinker which in turn requires grinding to produce a saleable cement product.

A cement mill is the equipment that used to grind the hard, nodular clinker from the cement kiln into the fine grey powder that is cement. Most cement is currently ground in ball mills.

Cement clinker is usually ground using a cement ball mill. This is essentially a large rotating drum containing grinding media - normally steel balls. As the drum rotates, the motion of the balls crushes the clinker. The drum rotates approximately once every couple of seconds.

Grinding systems are either 'open circuit' or 'closed circuit'. In an open circuit system, the feed rate of incoming clinker is adjusted to achieve the desired fineness of the product. In a closed circuit system, coarse particles are separated from the finer product and returned for further grinding.

Repair method
